I'm Alan Chen (he/him), a fourth-year student currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University. In this website you can find my education, experience, projects, and activities.

Software Development Engineer Intern

May 2022 - Aug 2022

  • Deployed an automated device test farm for Android application verification, supporting multiple device configurations and parallel job requests, by designing a scalable back-end service using AWS services including Lambda, ECS, SQS, S3, DynamoDB, and API Gateway
  • Reduced the number of manual effort hours required to implement software changes throughout Amazon's devices by providing automation of device validation and verification when software changes are introduced via an API
  • Continuously worked across multiple teams and with senior engineers and management to gather requirements, identify risks, prioritize tasks, and verify the proposed design

  • Created a python program to verify open-loop test outputs for New Glenn's flight and control software by calculating and plotting the error between thousands of expected and actual outputs
  • Implemented the team's first tracking of a technical performance metric into a web GUI. Integrated both projects into continuous integration pipelines to run automatically

  • Spearheaded increasing the security and code quality in the data access control and engineering data applications by integrating SonarQube into the CI/CD pipelines
  • Created React applications to increase automation to significantly reduce the time needed to approve npm packages and help managers sign-off on engineering documents

  • Trained in reverse-engineering concepts including DLL-injection, python packet building/sending, return-oriented programming, and creating a Linux kernel module
  • Built a debugging tool that led to discoveries while contributing to an internal reverse-engineering project

Developed a friendly relationship with many students, helping them remain returning customers. Also was able to rapidly adapt and change roles so that I could help where it was needed the most.

Shadowed a Software Engineer for my high school Senior Project. Learned about the software requirements and design that goes into a CAT Scanner. Also made a small C++ program that uses the PCAN protocol API from Peak Systems to send simple data over a CAN Bus network.

Projects


Bear Blog Engine

Personal project. Search-engine-optimized and progressive web application frontend utilizing server-side rendering with an admin dashboard to manage posts and editors. Backend is a REST API with JWT authentication to interact with databases for a dynamic blog engine. Integrated Docker and GitHub actions for automatic deployment and development.

College Cheque

Winner of JPMorgan Chase's "Best FinTech for Good" Challenge for Hack OHI/O 2019. Team of 3 project made for prospective college students and parents. Users input information to recieved personalized financial information on specific colleges based on data from over 8,000 rows and 60 columns of data. (Flask, Bootstrap, jQuery)

Omnidirectional Autonomous Robot

Semester-long class team project building a autonomous robot to complete tasks on a course. Designed a tri-wheel omnidirectional drivetrain and implemented an effective PI controller.

Healthry

Team of 2 project. A webapp for a searchable database of hospitals in the US. Uses Google Maps API and external databases for data. (Flask, Bootstrap)

Toonify

Personal project. Android app that applies a cartoon effect onto a photo. Uses OpenCV and camera API's. Extension of C++ program with many more filters. (Java, C++, OpenCV)
